In 1971, brothers Stephan and Jimmy Tsukayama opened Kailua Bike Shop on Uluniu Street in Hawaii. The company prospered during the Energy Crisis and used its additional capital to expand into other markets and created "Hawaiian Island Creations" to appeal to Hawaii's tourist industry.
A few years later, HIC introduced surf accessories, "Kailua Surfboards" and a full-scale skateboarding department to their new and current location on Hahani Street. Their first surfboard factory soon followed. HIC's reputation of warm and friendly personal service influenced the management of Ala Moana Center to offer a rare invitation to HIC in support of a bike and surf shop. By Summer 1980, the HIC flagship store opened as Hawaiian Island Sports.
Presently Coral Head in California is the national HIC clothing license and SFO Hawaii is the surfboard licensee. Internationally, HIC has licensees in Europe, Brazil, and Japan. Today, HIC has 7 location on the island of Oahu and 1 location in Lahaina, Maui. HIC continues to grow with Hawaii and with over 40 years of experience, HIC is still Hawaii's finest surf shop... Enjoy the ride!
