Cleaning Your Birkenstocks: From Mess to Yes!

Birkenstock shoes have become more and more popular in recent years. Numerous celebs from Heidi Klum, Cara Delevingne, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been spotted sporting their Birks. We all know that Birkenstocks look and feel fashionably magnificent with a pair of knee highs, roasting marshmallows at a bonfire this fall (omg). With proper care, Birkenstock shoes can retain their comfort and good looks all year long.

Check list to keep your Birkenstock shoes looking good and feeling fresh:
  • Soft cloth
  • Soft-bristled brush
  • Baby shampoo or gentle hand soap
  • Cork sealant
  • Leather cleaner
  • Suede Brush
  • Spray-on suede protector
  • Small bowl

If your Birks get muddy, you shouldn't attempt to wipe them until the mud has dried. Doing so might cause the leather to stain. If your shoes have really taken a beating, dipping the soft cloth in leather conditioner (Leather Honey is a great brand) will help renew the shoes while taking away scuffs and marks. Always allow your Birkenstocks to air dry away from sunlight or heat. birks, birkenstocks

Using the soft-bristled brush, you can wipe away most surface dust on the shoe. Doing this can also restore the nap and have your kicks looking much newer. A suede brush works especially well on the upper material and keeps it looking fresh.

When it comes to the cork foot-beds, they can get pretty unpleasant. By using baby shampoo or gentle hand soap and warm water, you can clean them up tremendously. To keep the cork from drying out, you can apply cork sealant. Birkenstock makes their own cork sealant, but you can also find other brands online or in your area's department store.

Whenever your Birkenstock sandals feel like they've attained a more lackluster complexion, once you've cleaned the shoes thoroughly, using spray-on suede protector can keep them shining brighter and lasting longer between cleanings.

So go out there and get moving in your Birkenstocks this fall. These shoes were made for walkin'.
